The Keelmen’s Hospital in Newcastle is a historic building originally constructed for keelmen and keelmen’s widows. The building was last used as student accommodation but is now vacant and disused. Martin Hulse takes us on a tour through the deserted building, tells us about the heritage of the site and the plans to bring it back to life. This video is one of the results of artistic research Yilmaz Vurucu and Bahanur Nasya conducted on the industrial heritage of Newcastle in summer of 2023.

We interview Dawn Felicia Knox of Star and Shadow Cinema as she explains the working class industrial history of Newcastle and its impact on cultural ecosystems. She walks us through the impressive Star and Shadow Cinema building, and provides a historical overview of how this volunteer run creative space was established, and is managed collectively as a non-hierarchical, egalitarian, inclusive organization.
